Somewhere the gospel got rewritten in your head as a performance review. So you keep producing, keep proving, keep hoping today's effort holds your identity in place.
Name the one thing you are trying to earn from God.
Receive it today instead of working for it.
Do one act of obedience out of gratitude, not fear.
INSPIRATIONAL STORY
Stop Auditioning for a Part You Already Have
There is a kind of exhaustion that only religious people get. It comes from trying to keep a love you were never in danger of losing.
You pray so He will be pleased.
You serve so He will stay.
Then, you have a bad week… and something in your chest says “He’s disappointed in me.” or “I’m back to square one,” or “How do I get back into His good graces?” So you spend Sunday making it up to Him.
You’re auditioning for a part that’s already yours. Isn’t that exhausting?
Paul asks the Galatians a question with a blade in it. “After beginning by the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by the flesh?”
The Galatian church received its identity as sons and daughters through grace, but then they quietly went back to earning it. That is the most natural drift in the Christian life, and almost nobody notices it happening to them.
Ask yourself what you would do differently today if you knew for certain that God's affection for you was settled and could not be moved by your performance. Whatever comes to mind is where the auditioning lives.
Think about the prodigal son who left his father. And when he hit rock bottom, came limping home expecting to serve his father as a slave to earn his place back. But what did the father do? Did he shake his head in disapproval? Did he make his son start back at the bottom and earn his trust back? No! The father ran to him, embraced him, and clothed him.
That’s you, my friend!
Here’s your focus for today:
Name the Audition: Identify the one thing you are performing to earn from God.
Receive It: Sit for two minutes today and accept it as already given.
Obey From Gratitude: Do one act of obedience because you are loved, not to secure it.
Anchor your day in this truth: “Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh?” (Galatians 3:3)
You’re a child that’s unconditionally loved, not a prospect applying for a position. Live like it.
FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT
Fruit of the Spirit Action: Eat slowly, putting your fork down between bites.
