Overcoming the Nightmare of Losing My Children
With Gerard Long, Christian CEO, author, minister, and public speaker
The Grace of God
God often allows suffering to reach and teach us. This suffering can open our hearts and minds and help us grow closer to Him, so He can refine us.
After suffering the sudden loss of his son, then his daughter—Gerard Long found himself completely broken. Today we’ll learn how Gerard found healing and what God’s grace truly means.
Words of Hope:
“God will not protect you from anything that will make you more like Jesus.”
― Elisabeth Elliot
LIFE
In part 1 of Relentless Hope, Gerard Long reminds us that God gives us the strength to endure suffering, so His grace is displayed. God allowed Gerard to suffer several times but never caused it. Through his heartbreaking tragedies, Gerard discovered God’s will for him. He and his wife answered God’s call by starting a ministry to help heal the broken-hearted.
We are all worthy of God’s grace; regardless of brokenness, no one is too far gone for His rescue.
LEADERSHIP
In part 2 of this series, Gerard explains the three traits of a great leader: mission, vision, and character. He encourages Jesus’ followers to spread the good news and fulfill the specific work God has called them to do. He emphasizes the importance of guarding our hearts and believing that God will heal us in His timing. Gerard advises us to focus less on outer appearances and overflow with love for Jesus so we can love others and His will is done. God calls everyone to serve, and together we can shine for Him.
LEGACY
In part 3 of Relentless Hope, Gerard shares that legacy is what you’ll be remembered by and how you lived your life. He credits God for working all things for good from all his struggles and losses, and he wants others to do the same. Gerard hopes people remember him as one who trusted God’s plan, despite his tragedies. He wants to share his experience to show us that when we bring God into our hearts, He will give us the grace to do His will.
Scripture to reflect on:
“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”
– Hebrews 4:6
Closing prayer for Gerard’s story:
Dear Lord, some days I feel so wrapped up in my suffering that I forget You have a grand plan for me. Thank You for never turning away and being with me through my grieving and pain. Please help me feel Your strength, power, compassion, and mercy so I may be Your faithful servant. I willingly lay down my will to do Yours. In Jesus’ Name, amen
