Drift is quiet and it never announces itself.
No one wakes up and decides to walk away from God. They stop paying attention, one small skipped thing at a time, until the shore is out of sight.
Name the one habit that quietly stopped.
Put it back on the calendar today, not Monday.
Tell one person so it has a witness.
INSPIRATIONAL STORY
Nobody Drifts Toward God
A boat tied badly doesn’t sink; it leaves. No noise, no crash… just a slow slide out with the tide while everyone sleeps on the deck.
Curtis didn’t quit church. He just missed one Sunday for a soccer tournament. Then two for a work trip. Then, a few because getting three kids dressed felt like a wrestling match he kept losing.
Ask him today, and he will tell you he still believes. It’s not a lie. He definitely still believes in God. He just hasn’t opened a Bible since spring. You see, although he believes in God, his life no longer seems to have any room for Him.
This isn’t about shaming, it’s about naming. Naming the truth that nobody drifts toward God.
The current doesn’t run that direction. Every single thing you stopped doing, you stopped doing without ever making a decision.
Hebrews puts it bluntly. “Pay the most careful attention, so that you do not drift away.”
Careful attention is the defense against drift.
Drift is slow, which means it’s catchable. The same slowness that hid it from you is the slowness that leaves the rope still within reach.
Jesus told a story about a shepherd who left ninety-nine safe sheep to go after one that wandered. The lost sheep never ran away. It kept eating, head down, one patch of grass at a time, until it looked up and didn’t know where it was.
But the shepherd went after His sheep… and He's coming for you, too.
Here’s your focus for today:
Name the Leak: Say out loud the one practice that quietly stopped, without excusing it.
Put It Back Today: Schedule it for today instead of waiting for the next clean starting point.
Give It a Witness: Tell one person what you just decided so it stops being private.
Anchor your day in this truth: “We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.” (Hebrews 2:1)
You are not lost. You are just further out than you meant to be. And luckily, you don’t have to row back to shore on your own. The Good Shepherd is coming for you.
